Under The Yardarm » Blog Archive » The weekend… a little good… a ...

Friday afternoon at work I was so looking forward to the weekend. It was our fortnightly late night shopping and eating out night (yayness) and my sister, brother in law and niece were here for the weekend, extra yayness!  All started well with some gratuitous retail therapy and tea on Friday night. The weekend was off to a good start.

Saturday morning I took the pup for a run… he was well behaved, he sat at the road edge when told, and ran along with me happily.  We even made a new personal best distance & time! The Blue Eyed Boy was at a friends, and Hubby and The Green Eyed Girl had gone to collect a new fish tank. I had just organised train pick up times for sis & co, all in all a little bit of weekend good.

Then, the pup escaped… and a car went racing by on our quiet lane.  This was too much for a fox terrier to ignore and he was after it.

I didn’t need to hear the yelps of the pup being hit by the car.  I certainly didn’t want to see The Green Eyed Girl’s ashen face as she ran up the driveway saying “Daddy says ring the vet”

We didn’t ring the vet, we just drove to them.  The pup breathing heavily and bleeding.  Rusty was taken from us straight away and placed on oxygen and given pain medication.  We were told he would need to be stabilised before a proper assessment could be done.  So we went off for an hour and did a few things.

When we rang the vet to check, they said he had stabilised a little but he’d need to go to a 24 hour vet clinic.  So, that’s where we drove him.  What a place it is there! Think hospital emergency department, but for animals.  Seriously.  We, or more to the point Rusty, was triaged and taken straight through to be placed on more oxygen. We sat in the waiting area, well, waiting really.

Rusty has been at the emergency vet since Saturday and will more than likely be coming home tomorrow (Tuesday) He is one very lucky pup.  He somehow managed to have no broken bones, but a lot of grazing (which is worse than bone breakage apparently) and his lungs were full of blood.  When last we checked in he was out of the oxygen tent, and trying to get rid of the oxygen probes in his nose.
